National History Day Process Paper
When we were told the topic of National History Day was turning points we immediately thought about the abolition of slavery. We thought about the abolition of Slavery not just because it was one of the biggest controversies in U.S. history, but also because of its effects. The Peculiar System was not abolished until 1860, but the events that happened in 1831 have direct effects in the abolishment of slavery. One very controversial man in the year 1831 was William Lloyd Garrison. This man wrote very persuasive articles about the emancipation of slaves in his newspaper, The Liberator, and went on to influence some of the greatest abolitionists of the time. Another man, Nat Turner, lead on of the most successful slave revolts in the summer of 1831. Nat Turner and his men were able to kill over 60 people in the slave revolt. These two men left impressionable marks on the abolition movement that would change the outcome of history. The last event in 1831 is the Baptist War, the rebellion led by Samuel Sharpe, which gained independence for all slaves working under the french sugar plantations. These three drastic events lead us to choose the critical year of 1831 as one of the turning points in U.S. history.
The research we used for our project consisted of a mixture of encyclopedias, books, and primary sources. When we first decided upon our topic we used encyclopedias to do some background research and get a general sense of the events that had taken place in 1831. Once my partner and I created our thesis statement, We each did some more in depth research. We read a book about Nat Turner that allowed us a greater insight into his revolt and the effect it had on slaves across the United States. We each found a website about William Lloyd Garrison and his paper, The Liberator. After our individual research, we decided to go more in depth. We searched for primary sources which included some of Lloyd Garrison's papers and sections of Nat Turner’s Confessions. We were also able to go to our local library and find books on Nat Turner and William Lloyd Garrison. The research allowed us to have a deeper understanding of the topic and project.
After doing research my partner and I decided upon creating a website to convey our topic, due to the internet being a growing global system of learning and education. The website is effective because it displays the information in a neat organized way. Within each page my partner and I go into depth with the background and its effects on the abolitionist movements. We can also made it aesthetically pleasing to viewers, which was due greatly to the possibility of creating a website. With the project being full of facts, and visuals, we can publish it to the internet and we can present our findings a global way.
